Few things that I can think of are more American than baseball. The beer, the hotdogs, the sight of fat men in tights running around; and out of all the sports that I could play, this is my favourite one by far. Why? Because it’s so damn fun.
Granted, I have fond memories of my mom and step-dad being part of two or three leagues in the summer and going to watch them play almost every night. My brother and I would sit in the grass and run around, eat hot dogs and ice cream and generally have a great time. In those days, someone always had a cooler of beer handy but today it’s against league rules to bring beer. (Totally stupid, imho. Although, this isn’t really the league’s fault – it’s illegal to drink in public spaces in Ontario.)
So last night, the BF and I put on our baseball hats and went to our first game of the season. We play in a completely recreational league, which means it’s basically for fun. Ocassionally, we play against assholes who only have the minimum number of girls (3) and don’t play them on the field (which you’re supposed to otherwise you automatically disqualify) and who play as if this game is the most important thing in their lives and you just know they all had asshole parents who taught them that winning is everything and losing is for an inferior race of people. And those people are called People Who Like To Have Fun.
However, for the most part, the other teams have great senses of humour and it’s a ball all around.
Today, my shoulders hurt from swinging the bat, and I’m sore from running (or it could be from the biking), but I had so much fun last night. We lost by 3 runs, but we went for beers with the team afterwards and had some laughs.
Hoorah for Baseball Wednesdays!

I have very vague memories of watching the Blue Jays at Exhibition Stadium many, many years ago, and more recent memories of watching the Mets playing at Shea. I love watching baseball, moreso because they bring beer to where you are sat!

It’s not the winning and loosing that counts. It’s the crushing under booted heel
